Dear: Ketia
I really miss you. I just wish that you could of come with me and my family on the voyage to New Zealand.

On the first day of the voyage it was very scary and I didn't know what to expect. It was so boring just playing with my sisters on the waka I bet it would of been better if you came.

The voyage was very long. we stopped quite alot of times on the way. well I have to go now hope to hear from you soon.

Waka ama race

Someday I would love to join in a waka ama race because I feel that it will be really fun and I would also like to make new friends on the way.

  1. Hi Atalina,

My name's Ruby and I'm one of the people who will be blogging with you this summer as part of the Summer Learning Journey. It's great to see that you have made a start on these activities! Well done!

I enjoyed reading all of your activities here. You have thought of some good Maui facts and it's awesome to see that you have heard other Maui stories! He was quite the legend of Maori mythology. It would be great if you could tell us something you learnt from the "Maui and the Giant Fish" story! I learnt that Maui used his own blood as bait for the fish!!

You've written a great letter. I like how you have used your imagination to make the writing seem personal when talking about playing with your sisters. Perhaps you could also tell your friend something you are looking forward to or something you saw on your voyage.

Waka Ama racing looks like a lot of fun! It's great that you'd want to give it a go. You would have to be great at teamwork to all be rowing at the same time, so I think it would be a great way to make new friends.
I wouldn't want to be in a Waka Ama race myself. I'm not very good at swimming and would be afraid of falling in!

I look forward to reading more of your blog over summer.
    Cheers,
    Ruby.

  2. Hey Atalina,

Happy New Year! I hope you are spending a lovely holiday with your family and friends.

First of all, well done for posting your first ever Summer Learning Journey activity blog! You have done all three activities for Week 1 Day 1 :)

The 3 facts you have written are very true, and I like how you mentioned the fact that Maui has a sister. Do you know what her name is? What do you think her personality might be like? From my own perspective, I think she would be different from Maui's brothers - so she would be kind and nice.

A long voyage to New Zealand in a waka would be extremely scary and boring for me as well. I could connect with the main character (First person) and feel the same feelings as her - boredom, tiredness, and fear. It would be awesome if you have included more descriptions of the setting - what you can see, what you can hear, touch, smell...

Waka Ama race sounds very interesting and exciting doesn't it? It's great to hear that you would participate in the Waka Ama race if you were given the opportunity. I have kayaked in Tauranga, Lake Taupo, and Waiheke. I really enjoyed it and I guess Waka Ama race would be somewhat similar to paddling on Canoes.

I look forward to hear back from you and reading more of your activity blogs!
    Have a great day,

    Jade C.

  3. Kia Ora Atalina,

I’m Dani, a member of the Summer Learning Journey team. I normally comment on blogs in the Kaikohekohe cluster ( Northland) but I have been lucky enough to get the chance to visit some blogs in the Uru Manuka cluster!

You have shared some great facts about Maui. I think he is a cultural hero in many Polynesian cultures including Maori as well! My favourite myth about Maui is when he tried to find his father. He took on the appearance of a Kereru so that he could follow his mother to the underworld. What Maui myth is your favourite?

I have been on very boring and long car trips that have lasted a day. I can’t imagine how boring a voyage to New Zealand would be! At least if you were in a car you would be able to stop and get out and stretch your legs, you can’t do that in the middle of the ocean! Are there any games you play with your family when you are in the car for a long time? We used to play I spy or battleships because we had the travel version.

I agree with you! I think Waka Ama would be a lot of fun and I bet you would make new friends. I would be slightly worried that I didn’t have enough endurance to paddle for longer races but I bet I would get fitter very quickly!

It’s awesome to see that you started the Summer Learning Journey activities, I hope to see you posting more activities soon.

    -Dani
